The Special Merlympics will be held for the first time in 2025. For us, "Special" means creating a competition that integrates all mermaiding enthusiasts and provides a platform to practice the sport of mermaiding, even with limitations.

Prerequisite For Participation

All registered organizations/ clubs/ schools and individuals are eligible to participate, the participants, organizations/ clubs/ schools to bear their own costs.

Each representative team is allowed a maximum of 7 participants (including 1 spare). Each Team must have at least one coach or Manager (can be taken by a participant).

A starting fee of 55€ per participant has to be paid after registration to the event organizer.

Each participant can represent only one team in the competition.
It is allowed to participate both as part of a team and as an individual in the official MerLympics.
It is not permitted to be registered across teams or countries.

There are no gender restrictions for participation in the team competition, and the team composition can be freely determined. A substitute team member can be registered for the team competition. If a participant withdraws, a non-registered team member is not allowed.

Age control

Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian throughout the entire competition and/or provide a consent form from their legal guardian permitting participation under external supervision.

Participants aged 50 and over must submit a diving fitness certificate upon registration.

There is no maximum age restriction.

Categories

Requirements:

Individual Perfect pose, eyes open, face free and relaxed.
Each participant can dive up to 2 times for the best pose.
- The pose must take place while floating.
- Eyes should be open, and the face should be free and relaxed.
- Diving can be done with or without a mask.

Criteria: The best pose will be selected jointly by the underwater photographer and the jury.

Requirements:

25 meters one way / 25 meters back with freely chosen swimming style.
You must swim with a monofin with a cover. After swimming the first 25 meters, the cover must be pulled down to the ankle as quickly as possible. One foot must be freed from the monofin. After the foot is freed, you swim back as fast as possible with one foot still in the fin. The swimming style for the return swim can be chosen freely.

All participants start, and the time for each participant will be recorded, which counts towards the individual ranking.

The two best scores will count towards the team ranking.

Requirements:

Participants swim on the water's surface with their arms extended in front of their heads as fast as possible.
All Specials 15 meter

Scoring based on monofin categories::
1: Polypropylene, full rubber
2: Silicone + one extra point
3: Carbon, straight style / Competitor – one point deduction

Not allowed: Waterway or similar Competitor fins with external wings, customized foot parts, angles, and widths. Neoprene-covered fins with laces or Velcro.

The fastest time is recorded.

Requirements:

The start is from the pool edge, and the hands must touch the pool edge. It is allowed to push off from the edge with the fin. The specified distance must be swum in mermaid-freedive style. The victim must be brought up from the depth and towed for the specified distance.
After freediving, participants are allowed to take a breath before diving down to the victim.

The participant must tow the victim using an underarm grip. The rescuer's arms must be extended, and the victim’s face must remain above water. If the victim is wearing a mask, it must be removed from their nose upon arrival.

EXPLANATION: 10 meters freedive, take a breath, swim forward to bring the victim up (approx. 5 meters), then tow for 15 meters. The fastest time is recorded

Requirements:

Predetermined swimming styles:
* Back floating
- Backward roll, 1,5 rotations (duck dive, forward wave, wave with half turn, backward roll, backward wave)
- Fish kick (side position, at least 3 waves)
- Mermaid Twist combined with one mermaid wave before and one after
- Handstand upside down, floating underwater, fin must be underwater

Creativity is encouraged.

A sequence of these specified swimming styles should be performed within a time limit of 6 minutes.

Wearing a mask is optional for Specials.

Requirements:

CleanUp / who picks up the most rubbish underwater

A professional jury will be in the water for some categories to ensure a more objective evaluation.
In November and February, there will be a video rules Q&A day where the categories will be presented.
All registered participants and coaches will be invited via E-Mail.

Conditions of participation

  • The participants must be accompanied by a coach who will represent the school at the information meeting on the evening of the 23.05.2025.

  • International athletes must have a diving insurance.

  • Registration deadline: 1. February, 2025

Special

At the Official SPECIAL Merlympics, participants with physical impairments and/or motor impairments, intellectual disabilities, or special conditions such as Down syndrome can register.

  • Participants in the individual category must be accompanied by a coach or supervisor. The coach/supervisor should, if necessary, be in the water.

  • We assess as objectively as possible and capture the functionally significant disabilities related to posture and the musculoskeletal system.

  • Consent for participation must be provided by a legal representative of the participant for the Official Special Merlympics.

  • Classification for individuals with disabilities and the consent form will be manually sent via email after registration.

  • Weights of any kind on the body, fin, or in and on the mermaid covering are not allowed.

National & International: Individual

  • All mermaids/mermen aged 8 and above can register for the competition. Participants must be at least 8 years old, and minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

  • Availability of participant spots is on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Should the maximum number of participants be reached, registration will be closed.

Material

  • Athletes must bring their own costume and monofin for the competition.

  • For safety reasons, the monofin must be from a recognized brand and must be in the shape of a mermaid tail; otherwise, it will not be accepted.

    Examples: Mertailor, Mng Fins, FinFun, SWEAM, Mermaid Linden, Aquamermaid, Mahina, Waterway Mermaid, Mermaid Tail Factory, Suntail, Kuaki, Magictail, etc.
    Monofins from websites like Alibaba, Aliexpress, or Wish will not be accepted for safety reasons.

  • Each participant must bring their own equipment to the event. For safety reasons, it is not allowed to share your equipment with other participants for the Official MerLympics.

  • Monofins can also be rented for the competition from Mermaids Wolfsburg, depending on availability. The cost per fin (SWEAM) with cover is €80.

  • Props and equipment used will be inspected beforehand (please present them at the information meeting the registration Day on 23.05.2024).

  • Glitter and sharp objects are not allowed. There will be an equipment check before the official MerLympics begin/on the day of registration. Full silicone tails (body and fluke) are not allowed for categories 2-6. For the photo challenge in category 1, a full silicone tail may be used.

  • Weights of any kind on the body, fin, or in and on the mermaid covering are not allowed.

  • There is no requirement for swim caps.

Login / Register

  • The host opens the registry no later than 6 months prior to the competition date. It is done through the Online form.

  • On the Social Media pages of Mermaids Wolfsburg and Official Merlympics 2025, the date of registration will be announced.

  • An approval is manually processed and may take up to 5 days to complete.

  • Registration ends on February 1, 2025.

Awards

  • In each category, the 3 best athletes will be awarded.

  • Each participant will receive a souvenir of this Event.

Event confirmation, documents and exact category descriptions as well as competition rules will be sent out via email after registration.
